Game Review: Tree of Savior (TOS). My Experience and First Outlook

Hello to all! YES, I KNOW! IT HAS BEEN AGES SINCE I UPDATED!

TOS review is here!

Gomen nasai!

Today, I will be personally sharing some of my experience in Tree of Saviors for past weeks. I got into the game via the early access package and I got to admit, it was pretty good albeit some flaws and bugs.

There are so many things I would like to express regarding this game.

Let's start with

Pros

Classes

This game has the most number of classes I have ever played in any MMORPG. 80 over classes and newer classes beyond rank 7 are being introduced right now. Good job to IMC for bringing a wide variety of classes for diversification.

Here's a full list that I made with info taken from http://www.tosbase.com/game/classes

I like the way IMC expanded based on Ragnarok and improves everything Ragnarok Online 1 (RO1) excels in. After all, you adapted based on the winning strategy and added extra features in which RO1 lacks back then.

Unlike Ragnarok, you can unlocks up to 3 circles for each class which then unlocks better skills and attributes for the specific class. Choose wisely as so far, there is NO Class Reset Scroll.

I use the following website to build my desired class.

http://www.tosbase.com/tools/skill-simulator/

Overall, I am impressed with the classes. More classes are being designed and will be added in future patches. Stay tune!

Open World Concept

Although there are a lot of invisible barries at the end of the map, most players who played RO1 understand the concept and this pose not much issue to the community.

As you progress through different maps and locations, you unlock the area in World Map. There are teleporting goddess in most starting maps. As you progress further to lv100 and above, city Goddess will not be able to teleport you to certain areas without goddesses. You have to travel back from the nearest map to your questing area.

In my opinion, this is not much of an issue although I have not played other classes, traveling seems to be a little of a hassle for non-dash classes like clerics, archers and mages.

*Swordsman class gets to dash through the map by consuming stamina. To replenish stamina, hit the crystals in the area or use stamina pills bought from Item NPC and you can continue dashing.

Pets

Pet feature in TOS is pretty good. Your pet helps in attacking and pets gain experiences and levels from hitting mobs. Your pet will level up along the way as you progress. Not an issue. The good part about pets is that they help leveling new classes easier for your alternate characters.

Some classes allow you to ride on your pet such as Cataphract from Swordsman Tree.

Background Music (BGM)

Any good MMORPGs will come along with good BGMs. This is to build immersive effects for players. TOS wins in this section as the composer for the BGM is by SoundTeMP

SoundTeMP is a Korean team composer for Ragnarok Online which made them famous. I am a fan of their work. Try some of SoundTeMP's work in youtube and you will understand what I am trying to imply.

This is especially great during Boss Fights, the bgm hypes you up for good challenge. Well Done TOS!

Area Designs and Effects

I have to admit, it calms my mind and gives me a sense of peacefulness when I explore different non-dungeon areas.

Cool Effects

You can even go to the top of certain areas with elevators

Some Maps, you have to travel by lifts or elevators to explore further. It gives a sense of dynamic feature.

Elevators

Dungeon Lifts

Questing

Most MMOs designed questing features in a very half-boiled work. Most of them are very linear and boring. However, TOS excels in this area as well. There are side stories from various NPCs, puzzle quests, and teleporting to different maps to clear bosses.

This removes the boring feature of questing.

Also to add, you can pretty much level all the way via questing and playing daily dungeons which unlock different dungeons at different level.

Save the world from its demise, fellow Hero. YOU ARE THE SAVIOR!

Puzzle Quest. (This is one of the tougher puzzle quest)

Grinding?

Most players with RO1 experience will understand the pain of grinding to max level. However, TOS removes such issue. During close open beta period (CBT1), the grind is so bad that major comaplaints from players pushed developers to rethink TOS gameplay.

After 3 CBTs, we finally get to enjoy TOS with almost 0% grind fest.

You still grind in dungeons at some leveling point.

However, the leveling curve in TOS is different. You will hit an easy point break after every certain levels. The experience needed will reset to lower threshold.

Check out the leveling exp needed HERE.

Yet another plus point for TOS being in the MMORPG genre.

Well done.

Other features

Attributes

Attributes is a thing in TOS as I mentioned earlier. Attributes boost certain skills, give additional sustain or effects on skills. You level up attributes by spending silvers (currency in TOS).

Some attributes are capped at lv100 while others are lower at lv1, lv5 etc.

Collections

You get this from chest in some of the maps. Make sure to explore every part of the map to check if there are chests. Chests are hidden among trees or at one corner of the map.

This is the NPC to deposit your collection piece. She is located in most major cities.

Collections allow you to boost certain stats for your character permanently. You have to drag the specific items needed into the collection to register it. Collect all needed items to unlock the stat boost.

Gameplay

TOS allows players to discover on their own. There is a main quests to guide you throughout the storyline. However, most side quests are obtained from various NPCs. There wont be notification to let you know there are side quests. Make sure to talk to every single NPCs you encounter. Some NPCs will not give quests until you have talked to the right NPC to unlock all NPCs too.

A sense of mysterious and adventure style for immersion effect for players.

Some may not like the style but this removes the babysitting feature of linear questing.

Most side quests have interesting side stories too.

Trading House

This feature is to balance out the economy in TOS by removing trading player to player directly. Premium Token Users however get to trade 1:1 without the limitation. Good feature to avoid crashing economy.

Tokens can be obtained by putting in real money from the Cash Shop NPC located in major towns. You can getby the game without Tokens too but there are various benefits for Tokens such as extra dungeon entry, 30% bonus exp from hunting mobs etc.

This is not a PAY-TO-WIN game. No worries guys. Hardwork in this game will bring you somewhere far in TOS. Casual players will eventually reach the same end point as well, just later.

Best Part about TOS

Boss Fights one after another.

Most quests will put a boss for you to fight. Use your wits to dodge attacks and kill the boss! You can solo most bosses by playing logically.

Early Game boss

This boss drops a very rare costume helm. 1% chance. I got it. Lucky!

Epic Lizards

Mermaids :3

It is not a boss fight without encountering Cerberus! BRING IT ON!

More Screenshots

Some class skill master located at random places. Explore more to find out their whereabouts and to advance to higher classes.

Yes, Cleric classes can use Kame Hame Ha! I am not too sure which class.

It ain't an MMO if you can't climb up to rooftop buildings.

The emoticons are pretty cute and better than RO1.

Yay! (P.S. that is the rare helm I got, Cool ain't it)

Cons

Various minor bugs still persist since CBTs period.

Rollback point bug.

As some servers located far from your region, you experience rollback to your previous location. It gets annoying at times especially for Swordsman who dashes all the way and resets back a little.

Try servers nearer to your region.

Dungeon Queues

It is a problem for me. Long waiting time and you definitely need healers to clear most of the dungeons unless with good pure DPS rush all the way. Healers are a MUST in dungeons. Otherwise, you die and respawn in starting point of the dungeon.

Going into the dungeon is not easy either. You get Disconnected Bug when you try to enter the dungeons. I was informed that this is due to most dungeons are full at the moment which causes such bug.

Developers have taken this into consideration and looking for solution. Fortunately, the developers and tech guys are quite okay in TOS.

All in all, do a little of research prior to starting Tree of Saviors so that you know what classes and how to solve some of the quests. That is all for now, I will be posting more of TOS if you guys are intetested, let me know in the chatbox beside the blog.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Announcement: Seven Knights and Current Standings for F2P user

Hey guys, indeed it has been awhile since my last post.

Many may wonder what happened to Mr. GamingRaccoon? Thousands of apologies to be made for my fellow readers.

With the introduction of Lu Bu, more and more Lu Bu users are rampaging in Arena & Guild War. I had come to a point whereby after trying and putting lots of efforts as a Free-to-Play user, I cannot keep up with the Top Arena Players.

One of the many reasons that hit me the hardest would be the timing of the developers in bringing in Lu Bu to the meta. At first, the summoning rate for Lu Bu was tweaked to a ridiculously low rate to maintain the drastic change in arena. However, there may have been a 'ninja patch' done by NetMarble thus bringing in massive increase in Lu Bu users. At 4000 rating in Arena, I have encountered 8/10 of the opponents with Lv30-lv40 Lu Bu users. 80% of the opponents I faced were Lu Bu.

Let me make my stand from over 500 arena matches for past 2 weeks as to the reason of me losing my passion in such a great game.

Lu Bu is so broken to the point, the best defensive unit, Rudy does not stand a chance despite being few levels higher than Lu Bu. With 1 turn of AOE from Lu Bu, be it a team of immunity or high defense team, you get chunked down to 20% or possibility of complete annihilation.

Lu Bu has 2 skills
  1. AOE removal of immunity and buffs
  2. AOE piercing (ignores defense and defensive buffs

So, as the description says, without another Lu Bu, by going by the book, common team meta such as:
  • Full Immunity (Delonse, Ming Ming, Nia, Daisy, Feng Yan, Mao Song etc.)
  • Full Defensive (Alice, Zhuge Liang, Rudy, Guan Yu, Lucy, Aragon, MingMing etc.)
  • Mix Immunity (mixture of both immunity + defensive by playing around with passive stackings)
Regardless of teams tested, you have to rely heavily on RNG to cc Lu Bu. That said, Lu Bu with Spike, you can throw away the strategy of even locking him down. What is next? Hoping Nia to land a Time-Jump before Lu Bu's turn? That's like praying for 20% chance of getting Nia's turn based on RNG and another 50% from the 20% chance of using Time Jump followed by a CC skill to lock him down.

Where do F2P users stand right now? Without another Lu Bu, we can settle at mere 3.6k- <4k rating. Master Rank is out of question. 3 weeks + of PVPs and over 500-600 matches brought enough data to conclude that NetMarble has messed up the patch by bringing Lu Bu in without other void shield users or other form of units to counter him.

Data does not lie. Chances of me meeting Lu Bu and chances of winning are less than 30% based on pure RNG regardless of the types of team builds. Knowing your chances of winning have diminished drastically, there is no longer the competitive passion and putting in efforts to polish your team.
Playing purely casual is one of the option with current patch or entirely drop the game and casual logins while awaiting future units.

However, we as F2P players face uncertainties such as 'When will NetMarble brings in units to counter Lu Bu AOE piercing?' and 'What are my chances of getting a Lu Bu myself to put up a fight?'. NetMarble screwed up the current meta and trying to fix the situation by bringing in Javes with AOE piercing to counter Lu Bu.

Does 7K revamped patch able to fix the issue? My answer is a clear 'NO'.

How many actually has a Transcended Jave or lv30 Jave?  Remember, previously most opt for Delonse and Rudy as F2P due to their utilities in PVP and Rachel for Castle Rush.

To stand a chance to fight a screwed up Lord patch, you must own a Seven Knight Jave.

Newly revamped Seven Knights (My thoughts):

Rudy
- 3 turns of buff removal
- usefulness? maybe perhaps to counter Kris' undead form. Otherwise, a disappointing addition to King of Defense

Eileen
- 100% HP resurrection and single target piercing + increased in AOE shock rate.
- very decent patch and possibility of using her passive to stack with Delonse for backline Phy Atk Unit

Delonse
- 40% damage boost from 20%. + 5 men silence nerfed to 3 men. Single target piercing
- another decent damage boost for the team and with piercing, he can punish defensive teams with ease

Rachel
- 3 men aoe damage reduction.
- possibility of giving pure Rachel Seven Knight users a chance to fight in Arena? Otherwise not much of a difference as she is still Queen of Castle Rush and AOE damage reduction makes not much of a difference

Spike
- Crit boost for allies, 100% block chance for himself and retaining the immunity to CC for the team
- massive boost for a Seven Knight in which his utility previously just for CC immunity. Better tankiness and Crit boost in power output

Kris
- 3 turns of undead and crit on Auto Attack.
- easily countered with CC and Buff Removal. Another disappointing addition.

Give credit when credit is due. The School Theme Costumes for Seven Knights were well-designed by developers. Props to the artists.

So, lastly, will I continue writing guides on Seven Knights?
Will I still be active in Gaming Guides?

Depending on the patches in SENA, I may not be writing any guides as for now due to losing my passion and competitiveness. Perhaps when silver lining in the clouds seem more obvious, I will come back to writing guides in SENA.

Yes, I will still be writing gaming guides but for other games.

I recently graduated from my studies and currently moving towards the working phase in life. Definitely will not be so frequent as before but I will try to post up some guides for you guys.

Till then, Cheers & Happy Gaming.

Game Guide: Seven Knights - Rediscovering Arena Meta & Guan Yu

Hey guys, this will be just a short post to share some of the things that I discovered from countless of PVP trials the entire week.

Being a F2P (free-to-play) player, it is not easy to maintain at 4.k-4.3k rating Arena. This situation is especially disastrous with the introduction of 3rd Lord: Lu Bu.

How are we going to win a Lu Bu team??

By breaking down my team and start from scratch. I faced countless of defeats, losses so unbearable up to the point I am at a loss on what to do (being the competitive nature I am).

As such, I tried various units mix and match to try 1 by 1 to rake up some statistics.

I stored enough Finas to test new units, transcended old units and ranked up couple of equipments for all the units.

The best team that anyone is capable of making out to compete against high burst/high pierce immune teams:

  1. High Damage Backline (Bai Long, Wu kong, Delonse, etc...)
  2. Nia (to remove immunity)
  3. Alice ( why Alice? I will explain below)
  4. Ming Ming
  5. Guan Yu

There is nothing much to explain for a decent backline. Even Rei, Mao Song, Velika works! However, I prefer to go for Immune Backline/ untargetable backline (Rei) , Backline with ressurect or bruiser AOE units.

Nia is there for 1 reason: Remove immunity. The extra bonus of adding Nia is to gain the paralyze/shock cc.

Alice?? Well, for 1, her passive significantly boost the damage. I took her for granted and tested a lot of teams without Alice. To be honest, those without Ace, next best in line is Alice/ Delonse.
However, there are more reasons as to why I chose Alice over others. Her heal removes debuffs on your team. Yep. That alone allows continuous DPS during your match. Also, once your backline deleted Nia/Rudy on opponent team, there is really no one to take out your resurrected zombie unit!

Ming Ming. Hmm...this has always been the core to current Arena team due to the passive being equivalent or 1 tier better than Lucy. High chance of CC. In fact,  I would rate top 5 highest CC units are:
  1. Mao Song
  2. Ming Ming
  3. Dellonse
  4. Eileen
  5. Tsing Tao (yes, this dude has seriously high chance of stun with auto attacks and counter/speed turns)
Lastly, a lot of debates have been going on regarding whether Guan Yu is capable of fitting into the meta. Top 50 players, not many use Guan Yu. However, I had tested over 70 (50% with Guan Yu) matches now.

I can say, by removing Rudy who is supposed to be bread and butter of my defense team, Guan Yu's  'Hold Your Position', unfortunately/fortunately provides way better utility to the team. The 1 turn void shield is seriously no joke. He has saved countless of times (given with the right team composition). However, the reason as to why he has yet to be well-received among public could be the very reason, 'HE IS SQUISHY and DERPING'.

Yes, indeed, he is quite squishy for a defensive hero, but NOT AS SQUISHY as you think if you can properly adjust your team, his buffs stack with MingMing's passive = a force to be reckoned. Hope this helps to remove the common misconception of Guan Yu!

FAQ:
How to build the equipments?

1. ) Lethal Guan Yu vs Speed Guan Yu?
I prefer him to go a mixture of both as you do not want him (a physical damage unit) to go for speed attack and counter. Why? Well, with current immunity teams, your best bet is to leave the highest speed on a magical damage unit to proc the speed attack and counter.

Lethal boost his precision to take out low health units after Nia's 'Time Jump'. His 1st skill is definitely a 1hit KO to all units.

2. ) Block + HP Guan Yu vs HP + HP Guan Yu?

I would go for double HP armors with a block gem. If you find him proc lesser block chance, go for Block + HP instead.

The following shots were taken during the entire bad RNG skill turns and proven effective despite the lackluster of CC choices made by AI.

With that, hope to see you guys on my next post. Cheers & Happy Gaming!
